Journey Through Time: Exploring ICOHS's Rich Heritage and Legacy
Ilorin Comprehensive High School, Ilorin (ICOHS) was established on 23rd of December (Founder’s Day), 1995 by Ilorin Descendants Progressive Union (IDPU) as a result of the upsurge in the number pf primary school leavers, most of them Ilorin emirate indigenes, yearning for Secondary School Education within the inadequate number of post-primary institutions in Ilorin metropolis.
The Union, on the recommendation of its Education Committee applied formally to the state ministry of education in January 1995 for the establishment of the school as a private institution. The union fulfilled all requirements for the programme as stipulated in the ministry’s regulations. All efforts to get approval for the school proved abortive until December 1995 under the able leadership of an illustrious daughter of Ilorin, Hajiya Halimat Ajoke Yusuf barely six weeks after her assumption of office as commissioner for Education.
The school took off with detached three blocks of nine classrooms and an office released to the IDPU by the management of Ilorin Grammar School Ilorin. The blocks were renovated by the union before being put to use while a vast virgin land was also released by the host school Ilorin Grammar School (IGS) for the permanent site of the school.
An Entrance Examination was conducted by the college and the first set of one hundred and forty (140) students were admitted into junior secondary one in January 1996. A principal, four (4) teaching staff were employed with a few part-time teachers from IGS to take off.
